How to Use This Hot Water Tank Sizing Calculator

  1. Enter the number of occupants. Set the household headcount. Each occupant contributes 12 gallons of hot water to the peak-hour demand — the busiest hour when multiple fixtures may run at once.
  2. Select the energy / heater type. Choose Electric, Standard Gas, or High-Efficiency Gas / Hybrid. Recovery speed affects storage needs: electric tanks heat slowly (1.25× multiplier), standard gas is baseline (1.00×), and high-efficiency or hybrid units recover fastest (0.85×).
  3. Set simultaneous peak showers. Enter how many showers could run at the same time during the peak hour. Each concurrent shower adds 20 gallons to demand.
  4. Toggle peak-hour appliances. Check whether the dishwasher (6 gal) or laundry load (15 gal) will run during that same peak hour. Only count appliances that overlap with shower and occupant demand.

Worked Example

4 occupants, 2 simultaneous showers, dishwasher during peak, standard gas heater:

Peak Hour Demand = (4 × 12) + (2 × 20) + 6 + 0 = 94 gal
Recommended Tank Size = 94 × 1.00 = 94 gal

The same household on electric would need 94 × 1.25 = 118 gallons of effective storage. A high-efficiency hybrid at 0.85× would target about 80 gallons — still in the large-capacity range but less oversizing than electric.

The result is peak hour demand in gallons, which maps to a recommended tank volume after applying a recovery factor for your fuel type.
Why does electric need a larger tank than gas?
Electric resistance elements recover hot water more slowly than a gas burner. During sustained peak use, an electric tank depletes stored hot water faster than it reheats. A 1.25× sizing multiplier accounts for that slower recovery. Standard gas uses 1.00× (baseline), and high-efficiency gas or hybrid heat-pump units recover quickly enough to use a 0.85× multiplier.
How many gallons per shower should I plan for?
This calculator allocates 20 gallons per shower running during the peak hour — a conservative field estimate for a typical 8–10 minute shower at 2.0–2.5 GPM. If you have low-flow fixtures or shorter shower times, you may size slightly smaller; for large rain heads or multiple body sprays, consider adding an extra shower increment.
What tank size do most homes need?
A 2–3 person household with one peak shower typically lands in the 30–40 gallon range on gas. Larger families with two simultaneous showers and laundry during peak hour often need 50 gallons or more. Results above 65 gallons suggest a 75+ gallon tank or a dual-tank / tankless supplement for high-demand homes.
Should I include the dishwasher and laundry every time?
Only if those appliances actually run during your peak hot water hour — usually the morning or evening when showers overlap. Dishwasher cycles add 6 gallons and a laundry hot wash adds 15 gallons to concurrent demand. Uncheck them if you stagger appliance use away from shower times for a more accurate, often smaller, recommendation.
