How to Use This Drainage Slope Calculator

Worked Example — Code Minimum

Worked Example — Steep Slope Caution

A slope strictly above 1/2 in/ft on a run longer than 20 ft triggers the yellow caution even when the code minimum is met:

3" pipe, 25 ft run, 0.625 in/ft installed (> 0.5 in/ft):
  Min Slope = 0.25 in/ft → code minimum met
  0.625 > 0.5 AND 25 > 20 → Caution (yellow)
  Total Fall = 0.625 × 25 = 15.63 in

What is the minimum slope for drain pipe per IPC/UPC?
Both the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) require a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per foot (2%) for drain pipes 3 inches and smaller, and 1/8 inch per foot (1%) for 4-inch and larger pipes. This calculator applies those thresholds by diameter.
How do I calculate total fall for a drain run?
Multiply the slope in inches per foot by the horizontal run length in feet. For example, a 20 ft run of 2" pipe at the 1/4 in/ft code minimum requires 20 × 0.25 = 5 inches of total drop from upstream to downstream.
Can drain pipe slope be too steep?
On long horizontal runs, slopes steeper than 1/2 in/ft can cause liquids to outrun solids, leading to sediment buildup over time. This calculator shows a steep-slope caution only when an installed slope exceeds 1/2 in/ft (strictly greater than 0.5 in/ft) and the run length is over 20 ft. Shorter steep runs, and slopes at exactly 1/2 in/ft, generally receive a green pass if they meet the code minimum.
What do the compliance badge colors mean?
With no installed slope selected, a gray informational badge shows the IPC/UPC code target for your pipe diameter. When a slope is selected: red means the slope is below the code minimum; yellow means the slope exceeds 1/2 in/ft on a run longer than 20 ft; green means the slope meets or exceeds the code minimum in all other valid cases — including steep pitches on runs of 20 ft or less.
Does 3-inch pipe require 1/4 or 1/8 inch per foot slope?
