Elevated System Pricing — Unit rate registers between $15-$25/ft. Standard residential replacement boundaries are slightly elevated. Verify rigging access parameters to protect margins.
Sheet Metal duct at $7.50/ft material plus 0.1 shop hours per linear foot. Unit-rate severity thresholds: green ≤ $15/ft, yellow $15–$25/ft, red > $25/ft.
How to Use This Ductwork Cost Estimator
- Select duct material and straight run length. Choose flex duct ($3.00/ft), sheet metal ($7.50/ft), or ductboard ($5.50/ft) from the material composition dropdown. Enter total takeoff straight run length in feet — the default 100 ft models a typical residential trunk-and-branch replacement scope.
- Enter fittings and accessory costs. Set the active fittings or turning vanes count for elbows, transitions, and takeoffs. Optionally override the blended cost per fitting (default $15.00) and exterior insulation wrap cost per foot (default $1.50) to match your supplier pricing.
- Set shop labor rate. Enter your fully burdened hourly shop labor rate. Default is $65.00/hr. Labor hours per foot vary by material: flex 0.05 hr/ft, metal 0.10 hr/ft, ductboard 0.08 hr/ft.
- Review total project cost and unit rate. The Live Results panel shows total project cost, calculated average cost per linear foot, material & fittings total, and labor allocation with approximate shop hours. All values update instantly as inputs change.
- Evaluate bidding severity badge. A RED badge flags high-density unit pricing above $25/linear ft. YELLOW indicates elevated pricing between $15–$25/ft. GREEN confirms competitive nominal production run parameters at or below $15/ft.
Formulas & Example
The ductwork cost engine combines linear footage material lookups, separate accessory fittings assemblies, and labor installation speeds into a single project bid estimate.
Base Material Cost = materialCost[ductType] × linearLengthFeet
Fittings Cost Total = fittingsCount × (fittingsCostPerUnit || $15.00)
Insulation Cost Total = linearLengthFeet × (insulationCostPerFoot || $1.50)
Material Total = Base Material + Fittings + Insulation
Labor Total Hours = laborHoursPerFoot[ductType] × linearLengthFeet
Labor Cost Total = Labor Total Hours × hourlyLaborRate
Final Total Estimate = Material Total + Labor Cost Total
Cost Per Linear Foot = Final Total ÷ linearLengthFeet
Material cost per foot: flex $3.00 | metal $7.50 | ductboard $5.50
Labor hours per foot: flex 0.05 | metal 0.10 | ductboard 0.08
Severity thresholds (cost per linear foot):
GREEN: ≤ $15.00/ft
YELLOW: > $15.00 and ≤ $25.00/ft
RED: > $25.00/ftWorked Example
Sheet metal duct, 100 ft straight run, 6 fittings at $15.00 each, $1.50/ft insulation, $65.00/hr labor:
Base Material = $7.50 × 100 = $750.00
Fittings = 6 × $15.00 = $90.00
Insulation = 100 × $1.50 = $150.00
Material Total = $990.00
Labor Hours = 0.10 × 100 = 10.0 hr
Labor Cost = 10.0 × $65.00 = $650.00
Final Total = $990.00 + $650.00 = $1,640.00
Cost Per Linear Foot = $1,640.00 ÷ 100 = $16.40/ft → YELLOW badgeAt default inputs with sheet metal, the elevated yellow badge applies because unit rate falls between $15 and $25 per linear foot. Switching to flex duct or reducing fittings count can bring the project into green competitive bidding territory.
