How to Use This Furnace Sizing Calculator
- Enter conditioned heated floor area. Set the total heated floor area in square feet for the building envelope. Default is 2,000 sq ft — typical for a mid-size single-family residence.
- Select your ASHRAE regional climate zone. Choose climate zones 1 through 7 based on your geographic region. Colder zones apply higher BTU-per-square-foot heating factors, from 22.5 BTU/sq ft in Zone 1 to 55.0 BTU/sq ft in Zone 7.
- Set building insulation envelope level. Select poor (1.20×), average (1.00×), good (0.85×), or excellent (0.75×) insulation multipliers. Poor insulation increases required heating capacity by 20%; excellent high-performance envelopes reduce it by 25%.
