How to Use This DFU to GPM Converter

  1. Select the plumbing jurisdiction code. Choose IPC (International Plumbing Code) or UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code). Each code applies a distinct piece-wise Hunter's Curve regression with slightly different hydraulic demand factors.
  2. Build the fixture matrix. Add fixture rows for each appliance type on the branch. Select a standard trade fixture from the dropdown to pre-populate the IPC base DFU value, then adjust DFU or quantity as needed. Use Add Fixture for additional rows.
  3. Optionally set a target required GPM. Enter a manual system sizing target in GPM to compare probable peak flow against your design goal. Leave blank to use default flow volume classification thresholds instead.

Formulas & Example

Total fixture load is the sum of each row's DFU value multiplied by quantity. Probable peak GPM follows piece-wise Hunter's Curve interpolation for the selected code.

Total DFU = Σ (DFU Value × Quantity)

IPC Hunter's Curve (piece-wise):
  DFU ≤ 5    → GPM = 1.0 + 1.8 × DFU
  DFU ≤ 20   → GPM = 10.0 + 0.6 × (DFU − 5)
  DFU ≤ 100  → GPM = 19.0 + 0.25 × (DFU − 20)
  DFU ≤ 500  → GPM = 39.0 + 0.14 × (DFU − 100)
  DFU > 500  → GPM = 95.0 + 0.10 × (DFU − 500)

UPC Hunter's Curve (piece-wise):
  DFU ≤ 5    → GPM = 2.0 + 2.0 × DFU
  DFU ≤ 20   → GPM = 12.0 + 0.7 × (DFU − 5)
  DFU ≤ 100  → GPM = 22.5 + 0.28 × (DFU − 20)
  DFU ≤ 500  → GPM = 45.0 + 0.16 × (DFU − 100)
  DFU > 500  → GPM = 109.0 + 0.11 × (DFU − 500)

Worked Example

5 tank toilets (3 DFU each) + 4 lavatories (1 DFU each) under IPC:

Total DFU = (5 × 3.0) + (4 × 1.0) = 19.0 DFU
Bracket: DFU ≤ 20
GPM = 10.0 + 0.6 × (19 − 5) = 18.4 GPM

Result: 18.4 GPM — Standard Branch Load (≤ 25 GPM)

Compare against a 20 GPM target: 18.4 < 20 → undersized supply (red). At 22 GPM target with 18.4 GPM output, the system would still flag red; at 16 GPM target, 18.4 GPM yields green compliant status.

What is Hunter's Curve and how does this calculator use it?
Hunter's Curve is a probabilistic method that converts cumulative fixture units (DFU or WSFU) into probable peak water demand in GPM. Rather than assuming every fixture flows simultaneously, the curve applies diminishing concurrent-use factors as load increases. This tool implements piece-wise linear interpolation across five DFU brackets for both IPC and UPC profiles.
What is the difference between IPC and UPC Hunter's Curve values?
Both codes use the same structural regression approach but UPC carries slightly higher hydraulic demand factors at each bracket — producing marginally higher GPM for the same total DFU. Select the code that matches your local jurisdiction before sizing mains, meters, or booster systems.
Can I override the standard DFU values for custom fixtures?
Yes. Each fixture row includes an editable DFU field. Selecting a fixture type pre-fills the standard IPC base value, but you can enter custom DFU ratings for specialty equipment, local amendments, or engineered fixture schedules.
How does the target required GPM comparison work?
When you enter a target GPM, the calculator compares probable peak flow against that value. Flow below target is flagged red (undersized supply). Flow at or above target but under 115% of target is yellow (tight margin). Flow at 115% or more of target is green (compliant with headroom).
What do the default flow classification badges mean without a target GPM?
Without a custom target, the tool classifies by volume: up to 25 GPM is a standard branch load, 25–60 GPM is elevated supply requiring larger mains, and above 60 GPM is a high-capacity system that may need engineered booster loops, hammer arrestors, and surge review.
